52/52 CLUB PHOTO CHALLENGE

This post was updated on .
One-Photo-Weekly Challenge – 52/52

At the January Club Meeting, the Advanced Group discussed the possibility of opening a 52/52 photo challenge for club members.

Basically, a 52/52 challenge requires participating members to take ONE PHOTO PER WEEK for all 52 weeks of the year and post them on Flickr. Photos will be compiled in a ‘Set’ on members personal Flickr sites and the completed portfolio of 52 photos reviewed at the end of the challenge.

The aim of the challenge is to encourage members to make a conscious effort to take more photos and develop a habit of posting them regularly. Members can decide to follow a definite theme over the course of the challenge or simply compile a visual diary, the choice is up to the individual photographer. Should anyone wish to consider a thematic approach, here are some I have seen used in the past; The Bridges of Ireland, The Water Pumps of Ireland, The Royal Canal, Self-Portraits, Barmaids of Dundalk, Irish Forged Gates …. the variety is endless. Remember, a theme is NOT necessary but it can be helpful if motivation or inspiration is flagging.

Participants should attempt to present their images appropriately, not just snap-shots but effectively edited (colour-corrected and composed) and titled.

We hope to commence the challenge at the beginning of February with interested members registering their intention to participate on the club FORUM.
Should you decide to participate, your first submission must be posted by mid-night on FRIDAY 3rd FEBRUARY and subsequently every Friday for the following 52 weeks!

Here is a summary of the rules;

• The challenge is open to ALL members, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.

• Club members must register their name on this thread and pay the €5.00 entry fee at the February club meeting. The club will match the sum of the collected fees and this will be the prize awarded to the best and most complete portfolio at the end of the challenge.

• Each photo must be taken during the week of submission, archive photos are not permitted.

• The titles of photos must begin with the week number, eg; 1/52, 2/52, 3/52, 4/54, etc.

• Participating members must have their own Flickr site and the link to it visible on the Boyle Camera Club website. If it is not already there, please send it to info@boylecameraclub.com.

• Members must open a SET on their Flickr site titled 52/52 and post all their images to the set each Friday before mid-night from 3rd February 2012.

• Exif Data must be visible on your Flickr account.

• Participating members must add their weekly post to the Boyle Camera Club Flickr Pool.

• There should be NO BACK-POSTING. If for some reason a member has not posted their weekly image by Friday, the period of grace is Saturday mid-day. Members cannot add images retrospectively! If you miss the deadline, the next post should be numbered accordingly, eg;
4/52 5/52 No submission 7/52 8/52 9/52

• This is a 'good-will' challenge, members should adhere to the rules. The challenge will be overseen by a committee member who will review participants submissions each Saturday after mid-day. A record will be kept and punctual posting will have a baring on the winning portfolio at the end of the challenge.

More details will be forthcoming at the February meeting but for now, get your name in here, make sure your Flickr account is active and start thinking PHOTOGRAPHY!

Looking forward to a favourable response here.

I am really looking forward to this .. Should be fun.

Sorry to be the one also looking for an answer but if I am wondering maybe others are too.  Just for clarification my understanding is that the first weeks photo must have been taken & posted between midnight Jan 27th and Midnight February 3rd 2011.  And everyweek after that by midnight on the friday night.

I hope I have pictures worthy of putting up on flicker but at least we all be making an effort to take photos which is great ..

Count me in..

Do we pay €5 at next meeting?

Tony, I'm not looking for any tips on cheating etc but is it possible to alter the exif data to change the date the shot was taken ? I would hope no one in the club would avail of it if it were possible but I'm just curious.     Mick

Re: 52/52 CLUB PHOTO CHALLENGE

Mick.
Yes it is possible to alter Exif Data and 'cheat' in a number of ways. The most common method is to take any old photo on the day, then in Photoshop, bring in an archive photo as a new layer on it an save it as a copy. The copy will now contain the archive photo but have the Exif Data of the new photo. Mick, I've been there with students for many years and seen it all with them. In the spirit of good will, I'm assuming we can be honest about it all. It's unlikely we'd be checking everyones exif data for every shot, that's like correcting homework!! This is simply a 'CHALLENGE' not a competition and in any case I can't see any members of Boyle Camera Club contemplating 'cheating', can you??:-) T

Thanks Tony. I was only asking the question as I've often wondered if it was possible to do it. I look at this sort of thing as being simular to moving your ball in golf and not declaring it - your mainly cheating yourself.     Mick.
